Island Life: Why We Live (and Create) on Coochiemudlo Island

When people find out we live and work on Coochiemudlo Island, we usually get one of two reactions:

1. Where’s that?
2. Oh wow, you’re living the dream!

And honestly? They’re both kind of true.

Coochie (as the locals call it) is a tiny island just off the Redland Coast, and it’s home for us—not just where we live, but where we create. Our soaps, candles, reed diffusers, and gift boxes are all dreamed up and poured right here, surrounded by sea breezes and kookaburra laughs and have been for over 10 years now.

Community Matters

Coochie might be small, but the community is mighty. We’re surrounded by other makers, nature-lovers, and everyday islanders who support each other. You’ll often find us at local markets chatting to our regulars, swapping stories, and hearing which scents you’ve loved most lately.

That connection is a huge part of why we do what we do - on the ferry we often get our market customers come back and say...

"Erin will you bring the big wild frangipanni candle to the next market for me please"

Kerry..."My sister in England loved her Pelican tumbler

And we love that....

Slower Days, Better Ideas

Running a handmade business is full-on, but living on the island gives us a slower pace to work with. We’re up early with the birds (literally), we have our Monday morning coffee + planning ritual, and the ocean is always just a short stroll away when we need to clear our heads or talk through a new scent blend.

There’s no traffic, no rush, and no giant shopping centres—just nature, fresh air, and space to breathe. That calmness finds its way into our products, too. Everything we make is about slowing down and creating little moments of joy, whether it’s washing your hands with a beautiful bar of soap or lighting a candle after dinner.

People have often said to me over the years "Do you think you will always live here and I can honestly say yes. The walk down the jetty, the ferry ride, the bringing groceries home in a trolley are all part of the experience. So keep in mind that when you order from us, you're not just buying a product—you’re getting a piece of island life. The slow mornings, the salty air, the creative chaos of the studio, the chats over the ferry ride, the testing and tweaking of new blends. It all comes together in what we send out to you.

So that’s us—,proudly island-based, family-run, and full of heart.
Thanks for supporting small, supporting local, and supporting a dream built on Coochie.

The Candle’s Out, But the Magic Continues

Here at Soaps Candles and Home, we hate the idea of anything ending up in landfill. That’s why, right from the beginning of our candle-making journey, we carefully considered how our vessels could be reused — even after the final flicker of the flame. Every jar, pot, and holder we create has been tested with reuse in mind, so once your candle has burned through, it’s just the start of a new story. Here are our top 5 reuses This dolphin pot was the perfect size for my claw clips - keeps them together and tidy I found the wild horses pot perfect for my hair ties. It's such a joy seeing these vessels continue to be part of everyday life, long after the candle has burned down. Instead of having an untidy bathroom, everything now has its place — and it all looks so pretty! Our reused candle pots have helped create a space that’s not only mo...
